Debut

"Don't you see what's happening here?" Jonas exclaimed from the back of the group of SGC personnel, unable to take the bickering between the nations of his homeworld, even while surrounded by Anubis' Jaffa, any longer. This was just getting ridiculous. He may have been born in the nation of Kelowna but his time with the SGC had shown him that there were more important things then national pride and borders. "He's using you against each other!" he said as he faced the Kelownan Commander and the Ambassadors from the three nations, people who only a year before Jonas had actually had respect for. Respect he'd somehow kept a small bit of, until this moment.

"Enough!" yelled Her'ak in Jonas' face but it didn't stop the Kelownan from continuing. It may be his fault that Anubis had targeted the planet from the information probed from Jonas' mind but he refused to allow the people of his planet to destroy themselves like this.

"You can't afford to fight any longer! This whole planet is a target, not just Kelowna or Terrania. You have to stand together here..."

But he was cut off as Her'ak interrupted with a loud, "I said enough!" and backhanded Jonas across the face, sending him to the floor.

Jonas made to get up but the sudden appearance of charged staff weapons in his face made him reconsider. But he couldn't resist one more verbal shot. "You've got to start trusting each other, otherwise you're all going to become slaves."

"If your lucky," came the retort from Colonel O'Neill, which Jonas was thankful for in hopes it would drive home his point. Any little bit mattered to make the Ambassadors finally see what was really important.

There was a heavy silence in the room, the only sound the machinery of the ineffective defense shields, before Her'ak turned with a clank of Jaffa armor to the Commander. "The crystal," he demanded with an outstretched hand. And Jonas' heart fell when the Commander of Kelowna handed over the crystal, which contained all the data about the naqahdriah and spelled certain slavery for his planet. The First Prime examined it before offering the Commander a sardonic, "Thank you." The Jaffa turned to walk towards the stargate, paused in the middle of the still standing SGC personnel and gave Colonel O'Neill an amused glance before turning and charging his staff weapon. He waited a long, orchestrated moment for everyone in the room to pick up what he was about to do and then fatally shot the Commander before anyone could stop him.

SG-1 was not surprised but even from his position from the floor, Jonas could see the light dawn in the Ambassadors' eyes. They were finally getting it. The danger their planet was in. He just hoped it wasn't too late.

Her'ak closed his weapon and addressed the rest of the room. "As for the rest of you," He pointedly looked around, "You will be publicly executed. As an example to all those who would defy their god."

There was only a slight pause before Colonel O'Neill cut in, "Does it have to be publicly?" Despite the situation, Jonas almost smiled at the Colonel's dark humor...until Her'ak charged his weapon right in the Colonel's face.

"I could kill you now," Her'ak offered in a voice the spoke of the pleasure he'd get from it.

The Colonel reached up and pushed the weapon away lightly with a falsely meek, "Publicly is fine."

Her'ak almost looked disappointed as he turned away and called loudly for the Jaffa as he turned back to the stargate. The Jaffa immediately sprang to action, gathering up the people in the room, including two of them reaching down to haul Jonas none too gently to his feet. Of course, Jonas was standing only for a moment before the underground base began to rock from explosions on the surface. Jonas fell behind the central command table, glad for the momentary cover to gain his bearings. He heard who he assumed was Colonel O'Neill react much faster, already back on his feet and shooting the Jaffa with one of the Tauri weapons, followed quickly by Teal'C who had already stolen a staff weapon from an enemy Jaffa.

Fighting had erupted all around Jonas by the time he regained his feet, just in time for Major Carter to toss him a staff weapon, which he deftly caught and began to fire, thankful for the training he'd gained over the last year with SG-1 so he didn't have to think, just react. He covered Major Carter as she made a break for Her'ak, who had already dialed the gate and established a wormhole for his escape. He breathed a momentary sigh of relief when he saw her tackle him at the bottom of the gate stairs, sending the data crystal flying across the floor. And it was because Jonas was still covering Major Carter as she wrestled with Her'ak that he saw Daniel make for the crystal, just as Her'ak threw the Major aside. "Daniel!"

He saw the enemy Jaffa aiming at Daniel, who now had the crystal in his hand, and just reacted. As he ran the few steps, his mind raced back to the fateful day over a year ago, when the Daniel had jumped through a window and risked death by radiation to save Jonas' planet when he himself had been too frightened to even move. Jonas had desperately been trying to make up for that day for the last year and he was not about to let Daniel die again in the service of Kelowna and this planet. He grabbed Daniel and shoved him out the way, just as the staff blast hit him in the back.

The pain blossomed from his right side and it was all Jonas could think about. He was vaguely aware of fighting still going on around him but at the forefront of his mind was the pain as he instinctively curled into a fetal position...and then quickly changed his mind as it just hurt more. But the pain he could deal with, as long as Daniel and his people would survive. Well, he was trying to deal with it anyway because, ow. This was certainly outside his realm of experience, as a scientist, diplomat and member of SG-1. He hoped the Colonel wouldn't ask him to smile.

Jonas was aware of Major Carter calling his name before she and Daniel hovered above him. At the moment, he was just trying to take deep breaths but had to give in to a small grunt of pain as he tried rolling over. That hurt even more then the fetal position. It was because of a deep breath that he was able to catch what Daniel had said above him. "I owe you one."

"We'll call it even," Jonas managed to get out through the pain, actually proud of the even tone he managed. There was some beautiful celestial irony going on, but he wasn't really in the mood to contemplate it right now. Then he tried sitting up. "Oh." Yeah, that wasn't going to work either. Finally, he just lay back and closed his eyes, trusting implicitly that SG-1 would get him the medical help he needed. Right now, he was just going to concentrate on breathing.

And it was because he finally stopped moving that he realized that the room had gone suddenly quiet. The machine noise was still there but it was different, quieter even. In a moment where the pain wasn't completely distracting him, Jonas managed to crack his eyes open. Instead of the underground Kelownan bunker surrounded by SG-1, the ambassadors and the enemy Jaffa, he found himself in what looked like the basement of an earth house, like the ones he'd seen when he'd been allowed off base to spend time with other SGC personnel. The walls were concrete and there were clothes washing machines along one wall. These details were quickly taken in thanks to his overactive brain because while the surroundings were different, the pain had remained a constant.

A year ago, Jonas would probably have stayed there and waited for someone to find him, but now he was a member of SG-1 and with a small bark of desperation, he levered himself up on one arm so he could finally sit up. The pain was excruciating and he immediately curled around his right side and arm, eyes squeezed shut. When he could take deep breaths again, he uncurled and found a staff weapon laying next to him. He picked it up with his good arm (good being relative since it was still numb from going through the force field in his cell in Anubis' ship) and positioned it so that while there was no way he could actually fire it, he could at least look menacingly enough for someone to at least look twice before attacking (something Teal'C had told him once, that appearing menacing could stave off many an attack despite whether you were a genuine threat or not), gritting his teeth all the while.

Once Jonas recovered his breathing from positioning himself and the weapon, his right arm and side still curled protectively beneath him, he ventured a "Hello? Is anybody here?" in an as loud a voice as he could manage. He figured he could afford to wait for a little while for someone to find him because right now, even with using the staff weapon as a crutch, he would be in no shape to get very far.

"I wouldn't have believed this place if Jack hadn't been the first person I saw," Sam admitted, with a huge grin on her face. With so many people she knew from home having disappeared--Jennifer, Ronon, McKay, Cam, Elizabeth--it was so good to hear of someone coming instead of going. "Can't blame him for being a little wary. I'll try to explain it all."

"And you should convince him to see a doctor," I mentioned casually, though I wasn't overly concerned with Jonas's condition. He seemed like he wasn't going to die.

"He's just in here, Sam. I'm sure he'll be happy to see you since he's so adamant."

Sam made her way to the rec room and stuck her head in. "Jonas?" Oh yes, it was Jonas all right, and her grin widened even more. She tried to contain her enthusiasm, so he didn't think she was a complete lunatic--the island was wacky enough at first without getting mauled by people on top of it. It just felt good to be happy about something for a change. "Oh my God. It really is you."

So far, Jonas didn't mind this island so much. The staff weapon had ended up on the floor more for lack of anyway for him to comfortably hold it but he really didn't get the feeling he needed it. Everything he was seeing tolf of a very comfortable, stable place, much like a less militaristic version of the SGC. A few people had come and gone from the room asking if he was alright, but he just smiled and said he was waiting for someone and he was fine where he was. A few gave him odd looks, but he was used to it.

When he heard his name, Jonas turned and his smile got wider. "Major Carter! Vala said you were here," he made to stand up to greet her, but flinched as he forgot monetarily about the wound on his side. He gingerly sat back down on the sofa but his smile only diminished for a moment. "It's me, mostly."

"It's really good to see you. Even if you're hurt--God, are you okay? You probably really should see a doctor. There's a lot I have to tell you, but I want to make sure you're okay first." How long had it been since she'd seen him? Six years?

"Considering I just came from a fire fight with Anubis' Jaffa, I wanted to be sure everything was safe first." Jonas said by way of simple explanation, complete with small shrug. He was still smiling as he assured her, "I'll live, I promise. If anything because I can't wait to here the explanation for this place. Vala promised it was a doozy."

Picking the staff up, Jonas used it to stand up more slowly. "There we go. I guess it's too much to hope that Dr. Frasier is around?"

"No, she's not," Sam said, a little sadly. She'd wished several times over the last few weeks that Janet would have been there. Shaking her head a little, she moved closer, helping steady Jonas on his feet. "But you're in good hands, anyway. Come on. Clinic's this way."

Jonas picked up on the sad note in her voice and opted not to ask. The feeling that he wasn't going to like a lot of the news from home that had started with talking with Vala was only growing. But he knew his curiosity would lead him to ask, especially about the defeat of the goa'uld.

But not right now. Right now, he was just really glad Carter was here. "So, I have to ask. Vala said the Colonel became a General. I'm still having a hard time believing it," he said as he smiled his thanks.
